Bible Thoughts by Terry Hedderman

- Tuesday, 10/9/17  2 Samuel 16:10, ..so let him curse, because the Lord hath said unto him, Curse David. I love how God shows us the humanity of His heroes! The sweet psalmist of Israel, called by the Bible “a holy man of God,” felt abandoned by his God. Maybe my depression/low times/doubts aren’t so sin-FULL after all.
Proverbs 4:1, Hear, ye children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know understanding. Young people, you’re not the first ones to think that your dad did SSOOOO much wrong and was SSOOOO out of line and is SSOOOO out of touch with you. However, regardless of his real or imagined faults, your dad is still your dad and God’s commandments are still commandments and not suggestions. So, are you asking him questions about your current situation? Are you encouraging him? Loving him? Dads get weary in the battle and often feel worthless and unwanted.

- Wednesday, 10/10/17  Psalm 119:2-3, Blessed are they that keep his testimonies, and that seek him with the whole heart. They also do no iniquity: they walk in his ways. Quit trying to quit sinning!! Just do more righteousness. Read the verses again!!                                  Have you changed what you used to believe? Do you wonder why you believed that in the first place? The reason may be that you quit learning new things, and the result was a forgetting of what you once knew. Notice Proverbs 5:1-2, My son, attend unto my wisdom, and bow thine ear to my understanding: that [or, so that] thou mayest regard discretion, and that thy lips may keep knowledge. The result of not attending and bowing is not being as discreet (ability to judge what is correct & proper) and not keeping (guarding, or treasuring) knowledge. Hmmm...

- Thursday, 10/11/17  Proverbs 10:2, Treasures of wickedness profit nothing: but righteousness delivereth from death. A major aspect of Christianity is to look at each aspect of life through a longer-viewing lens. What seems good today may actually be horrible and vice versa.                                    Far too many believers are ignoring the Old Testament, like it was the divine version of Windows 98. NoNoNoNo!!! Notice the word “ALL” here: Psalm 119:6, Then shall I not be ashamed, when I have respect unto all thy commandments. ALL of what God has said is important and has a purpose for us today. Has some of it been fulfilled? Sure, but that doesn’t mean to ignore it. Are we governed by OT civil laws? No, but we’re to know how God thinks. If it was “superseded,” why did God preserve it past the 1st century?

- Friday, 10/12/17  Proverbs 10:3a, The Lord will not suffer the soul of the righteous to famish. The word “famish” means “to starve.” This is a direct statement of a boundary the Lord has set up for Himself. Now, it does NOT say that your soul won’t go hungry, maybe for an extended period. Don’t mistake hunger for starvation.                         Psalm 119:22, Remove from me reproach and contempt; for I have kept thy testimonies1It’s possible to be a righteous, holy believer, AND to be held in contempt and reproach. (In other words, your problems may not be a sign that you’re doing something wrongly.)  2It’s OK to pray to get out of that sewer that you hate. It’s not a contemptible, selfish prayer.

- Saturday, 10/13/17  Psalm 57:1b, ...in the shadow of thy wings will I make my refuge, until these calamities be overpast. Obviously, this is figurative language, but staying in the shadow of His wings would indicate not going very far away. Are you closer to Him now, in your problem than before it came?                        Proverbs 7:5, That they may keep thee from the strange woman, from the stranger which flattereth with her words. The implication is that the attack from this woman and stranger WILL come, at least definitely to the young men, but probably the older ones too since Satan simply uses the same old playbook that has been so successful for millennia. Fellas, be on alert guard duty...your morals are the target.

- Sunday, 10/14/17  Proverbs 11:5, The righteousness of the perfect shall direct his way: but the wicked shall fall by his own wickedness. Let your principles or character make your decisions for you. Following your heart, or “gut instinct” is dangerous. First: what does the Bible say about the choices?                            Deuteronomy 8:2, And thou shalt remember all the way which the Lord thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no. Don’t forget the lessons you’ve learned and the progress you’ve made. We passed those classes and now they form the foundation for this new class. Don’t have to re-learn what you did last semester or last year.

- Monday, 10/15/17  Psalm 137:1, By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we wept, when we remembered Zion. In troubles, memories hurt. But, you’ve got to still live. So, hurt...AND limp forward IN the will of God. Don’t sit down and pout and whine and pine away to worthlessness.                         Proverbs 13:1, A wise son heareth his father's instruction: but a scorner heareth not rebuke. To me, a “rebuke” has the connotation of a higher level of volume than simple “instruction.” Perhaps the volume that the teacher/parent/boss has to use to get you to listen to what they’re saying is as much an indication of the state of your heart as it may be of an anger problem or poor teaching techniques in them. ‘Just something to ponder and/or ask yourself and the Holy Spirit.

Bible thoughts from some others:
- Ps 146:7, Which executeth judgment for the oppressed: which giveth food to the hungry. The Lord looseth the prisoners. Our Lord comes to the aid and assistance of those who are desperate and in need. PTL, He never fails or leaves us alone.

- Ps 147:3, He healeth the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds. PTL, He knows our hurts, and gives the right medicine to heal.

- Ps 148 & 149, Both young men, and maidens, old men and children: let them praise the name of the Lord. At every stage of life, we are to praise Him.

- Acts 17:13, But when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the word of God was preached of Paul at Berea, they came thither also, and stirred up the people. Preaching the Gospel of Christ will always cause controversy and conflict. Be prepared.

- Ps 149:6, Let the high praises of God be in their mouth, and a two-edged sword in their hands. God’s people need to be godly in their living, while praising God with their mouths, while having a tough, holy hatred for sin, evil, and wickedness. A tough balancing act.
