Romans 9:20
“Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the
thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus?”
There is a misconception among many that it is okay to question God as to why He is allowing something in your life. I have heard people say that God doesn’t mind a Christian asking Him, “Why?”. Those who say this and believe this say that God understands our weakness, which He does, so that makes it okay to question the providence of God.
The problem with this is that the Scriptures don’t agree with this mentality. God asks in the verse above, “…O man, who art thou that repliest against God?” God goes on to illustrate how foolish it is to argue with the Almighty. He says in verse 21, “Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour?” In other words, the clay never one time questions what the Potter is doing with it. The clay simply becomes pliable in the hands of the potter to make it into the vessel that he seems fit to make it.
Christian, as much as you don’t understand why God is doing something in your life or anothers, you are going to have to accept His providence and omniscience. God has the right to do with us whatever He desires to do because He is God. God doesn’t have to ask permission from you if He wants to do something. Moreover, He doesn’t have to explain every action to the created. He is God! He has a right to do with His creation what He desires because the created would not exist without the Creator. A few thoughts come to mind that should help you in this area.
First, God always has a purpose as to why He does anything in your life. The purpose why God is doing something may not be evident to you at the moment, but it doesn’t have to be evident for you to know that He always has a purpose for everything that He does. For any person to sit and question God is to doubt that He knows what He is doing and why. My friend, God’s purpose doesn’t have to be known to man for Him to have a purpose. Joseph didn’t know the purpose as to why he was sold into slavery and eventually cast into prison, but He had a purpose. Always remember that there is a purpose for anything God allows in your life.
Second, God’s purpose doesn’t have to pass your approval. The Potter didn’t have to ask the clay what he could do with it, and God doesn’t have to ask you if you approve of what He is about to do or is doing in your life. Who do we think we are to think that God has to ask us for approval? Always remember that God has the right to do with us what He wills to do; even if we don’t approve it.
Third, God’s purpose will “make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy.” Christian, if you will just understand that God’s purpose is to show His might through you, you could make those times when you don’t agree with what is happening in your life a fruitful time. God will be glorified through you, so let that be your anchor of hope when you don’t understand what is happening in your life.
You have a choice to question God and become bitter, or you can accept what He is doing and become the tool to show His power to a lost world. Let me encourage you with whatever you are facing to stop questioning God and accept that He is doing something great through your life.
