Bible Thoughts by Terry Hedderman

Sunday, 4/27/14  Ps 5:2 Hearken unto the voice of my cry, my King, and my God: for unto thee will I pray. A reminder: no where in the Bible are we allowed to pray to anyone but God. It is a slap in the face to Him, and, in fact, it’s idolatry to pray to Mary or St. Christopher or your grandmother Gertrude. See 1 Tim 2:5.          Ps 85:6 Wilt thou not revive us again: that thy people may rejoice in thee? Joy is a sign of a personal state of revival. Perhaps an indication of the degree of spiritual vitality is the degree of rejoicing in one’s life. See also Ps 5:11c.  Are you joyful??

Monday, 4/28/14  Here are a sweet pair of verses I hadn’t noticed before: Isa 54:7-8 For a small moment have I forsaken thee; but with great mercies will I gather thee. In a little wrath I hid my face from thee for a moment; but with everlasting kindness will I have mercy on thee, saith the Lord thy Redeemer.               How to get invited to go camping with God:  Isa 57:15 For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.

Tuesday, 4/29/14  Ps 6:1-2 O Lord, rebuke me not in thine anger, neither chasten me in thy hot displeasure. Have mercy upon me, O Lord; for I am weak: O Lord, heal me; for my bones are vexed. I think this verse shows what proper fear of God is: fearful of His ability to damage our lives, and because of that, an approach for mercy to One Who cares.              1 Pet 2:20 For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? But if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God. That’s pretty self explanatory.  To do the 1st half is expected of everyone...doing the 2nd half is where we start to become impressive.

Wednesday, 4/30/14  Ps 89:1a I will sing of the mercies of the Lord. Let’s talk about music. Do you only consume others’ product, or do you produce any of your own music? Do you only enjoy others’ performances, or do you contribute? You and I were given a voice and a brain: sing your song to God.              Luke 22:39 And he came out, and went, as he was wont, to the mount of Olives...  “As he was wont...”  Could your family tell me your spiritual habits? When do you pray? Where do you read your Bible? What is your normal soul winning time? What about praise? worship? confession?

Thursday, 5/1/14  Ps 89:1b With my mouth will I make known thy faithfulness to all generations. Let’s discuss conversation....even at church or before a SS class: do you talk about God’s blessings? Or is it only work, weather, and sports?       1 Pet 3:7 Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honor unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel... Knowledge comes from study: books (theoretical study) and laboratory (experiential study). Know your wife’s body: how it works, its hormones, stressors, health.  Know her favorites, pet peeves, needs and wants., dreams, aspirations, fears. (Boy, this thought is convicting....)

Friday, 5/2/14  God gives goofy orders!!! Think of Naaman getting in and out 7x in the Jordan River; Joshua walking 13x around Jericho and shouting at the walls; Abraham being told to sacrifice his heir; Ezekiel preaching to models of a city and to mountains; Jeremiah walking 1000 miles 4x just for a simple object lesson.  Two lessons: 1) Golden Rule: He Who has the gold makes the rules. If you want He has/can do, you’ve got to play by His rules.  2) We don’t have to understand His orders in order to obey His orders and thereby, receive the benefit.             1 Pet 3:9 ...that your prayers be not hindered.  We never deserve God to answer our prayers: He does so because He is gracious. So, our “being good’ doesn’t earn any brownie points with Him, but being bad will detract from our answers. Here, the message is specifically directed at poor husbands.                Pro 31:10 Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies. This type of woman is exceedingly rare and valuable. For all of us, men and ladies, in all aspects of life, are you content with being an average Christian, or do you strive for excellence (for God’s glory, not your own)?

Saturday, 5/3/14  1 Pet 2:9 But ye are...a royal priesthood... A priest is one who has access to God; one who can go directly to God on his own behalf, or another’s.  All believers are priests: your level of access is equal to anyone else’s...start utilizing it.             1 Tim 2:12 But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. “Usurp” - one who acts on her own authority, to exercise dominion or take control over the man in charge (husband/father/boss). God is against hard-headed, bossy women, who try to assert dominance over men.  Ladies, please meditate on this verse and see what the Lord would have you to change.
Thoughts from some others
Ps 136:26 O give thanks unto the God of heaven; for his mercy endureth forever. Twenty-six verses remind us to be grateful for God’s mercy that never runs out, from a God Who is everlasting.
Heb 9:27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.  Thank God for v28 and eternal salvation through Jesus Christ, our eternal High Priest. We should never take what it cost for granted.
Ps 132:4-5 I will not give sleep to mine eyes, or slumber to mine eyelids, until I find out a place for the Lord, a habitation for the mighty God of Jacob. Should we not be as concerned and diligent about His dwelling place today? He is stuck in the body we give to Him.
Num 35:31 Moreover ye shall take no satisfaction for the life of a murderer, which is guilty of death: but he shall be surely put to death. Too bad we don’t follow this command to the letter in America. God hasn’t changed His mind a bit. Get lawyers out of it and do public hangings again.
Heb 6:19 Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which entereth into that within the veil.  We have a High Priest Who enters freely into the presence of God Himself, having torn apart the veil that had separated sinful man and earthly priests from a holy God. What a secure place to be.
Ps 139:14 I will praise thee: for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvelous are thy works: and that my soul knoweth right well. Evolutionists need to read this. We need to open our eyes and see His handiwork.
Pro 2:3-4 The Lord giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.  The source of true wisdom, knowledge, and understanding is God’s preserved, eternal word. We need to love it, read, study, memorize, and meditate on it.
Pro 30:32 If thou hast done foolishly in lifting up thyself, or if thou hast thought evil, lay thine hand upon thy mouth. If we have acted foolishly or had an evil thought, we need to be still and not talk about it.
