Genesis 1:31
“And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.”
Mankind is in a constant search for fulfillment. Scores of books have been written to show people how to be fulfilled in life. Seminars are conducted to help people reach fulfillment. Yet, when man has followed all the advice of man, they still find themselves in search of fulfillment.
When you look at God’s creation, you will find that God’s actions give several models for man to follow. One of the models God gives in this chapter is how to be fulfilled at the end of each day. At the end of the day, you want to be able to pillow your head and have that fulfilled feeling that only comes from God. Several things you must do if you want to find fulfillment at the end of each day.
First, you must obey God. It is said several times throughout this chapter, “And God said…” You will never find fulfillment in life until you learn to obey God. One reason many people never find fulfillment is because they are not doing what their Creator made them to do. Many sports figures find themselves unfulfilled in life even with their great physical talent. Fulfillment will never comes from money, possessions, and talent exhibited; it is found by obeying God and the purpose for which He created you.
Second, you must work if you want to be fulfilled. God filled His day with work. Fulfillment was not found in playing or entertainment, but it was found through working. You will not find the fulfillment in life you are in search of without working. Work must be done every day for you to be fulfilled. You will probably recall many days in your life when you pillowed your head at night after a hard day’s work and had a heart filled with satisfaction. The reason you had that feeling was because you worked.
Third, you must do your best if you want to be fulfilled. God didn’t do a second-rate job, but He did His best. God doesn’t expect you to be someone else’s best, but He expects you to be your best. If you go to bed at night knowing that you could have done a better job at something, you will find yourself dissatisfied with that day. If you want to find fulfillment, you are going to have to do your best in everything you do.
Fourth, you must finish something daily if you want to be fulfilled. There is something about finishing that makes you look back and feel good about what you have done. God completed something at the end of each day. Every day you need to complete something. It doesn’t always have to be a big job, but something must be completed at the end of the day if you want your life to be fulfilled.
Fifth, you must not place your expectations on feeling but on obedience. It is interesting that God said that most days were “good,” one day He said that “it was so,” and only one day He saw that “it was very good.” Don’t expect everything to be spectacular. If you try to make everything spectacular, you will be disappointed because every day can’t be spectacular. Keep your focus on the actions you do instead of what you feel. If you do what is right, you will discover the feeling of satisfaction. Remember that life’s fulfillment is always found in the act of obeying God.
