Deuteronomy 1:6
"The LORD our God spake unto us in Horeb, saying, Ye have dwelt long enough in this mount:"
Horeb is a two-mile long mountain range that had significant impact upon the children of Israel. In this mountain range is Mount Sinai, the mount where Moses received the ten commandments. This is the mountain range where the rock of Horeb was, the rock from which the water came out. As you can see, Horeb had a significant spiritual impact on God's people.
However, God told Israel, "Ye have dwelt long enough in this mount:" God was telling them they needed to move on. I'm sure it would have been great to dwell beside the mount where God met with Moses, but it was time to move on. Certainly it would have been a wonderful time to see the water continually flow from the rock of Horeb, but they needed to move on. If they dwelt by Horeb, then they would have never conquered the Promised Land. If they dwelt by Horeb, they would have never seen the great victory of Jericho. Yes, they needed Horeb, but after Horeb they needed to move on so God could show His power through them.
It is highly important that every Christian understand the value of Horeb and moving on. You need to spend time daily at Horeb and study the Scriptures. You need that time at the rock of Horeb where you drink of the waters of God; however, you can't live there and see God do great things through you. You need to move on and take what you learned in Horeb so that you can see the victories throughout the day in your Promised Land. There are several reasons you need to move on from Horeb.
First, you will never grow proportionately if you don't move on from Horeb. Certainly, you need to spend time with God in the Scriptures, but the purpose of you learning the Scriptures is so that you can serve Him throughout the day. There are many Christians who are spiritually fat from the Scriptures, but they never take what they have learned to serve God. The reason God teaches you the Scriptures is so that you can use those truths to serve Him. You will never properly grow spiritually if you don't move on and take what you have learned from Horeb.
Second, you will never have great miracles in your life if you don't move on from Horeb. There were significant miracles that Israel experienced after they left Horeb. If they had stayed at Horeb, those miracles would have never been experienced. You will never see great victories in your life without taking what you learned in Horeb to serve God. God has victories and miracles planned for you, but you must move on and serve God throughout the day.
Third, you will never live in your Promised Land if you don't move on from Horeb. The Promised Land was God's will for Israel. God has a will for your life that you will never experience if you don't move on. God's will is not simply a place, but it is an action. It is the act of obeying what you learned in Horeb.
Christian, you cannot have the miracles and victories in your life without moving on from Horeb. You need to daily go to your Mount Sinai and rock of Horeb to spend time with God, but then you need to move on from what you have learned throughout the week and help those whom God leads across your paths. Don't avoid your Horeb, but don't stay at your Horeb, move on. Both are needed if you are going to live a victorious Christian life.
