The Influence of a Wife

Deuteronomy 17:17
“Neither shall he multiply wives to himself, that his heart turn not away: neither shall he greatly multiply to himself silver and gold.”

One of the common messages directed towards wives is for them to submit to their husband. Of course, this is not always taken with a good attitude, especially in a world that preaches that women have a right to do with their bodies what they want to do. However, there is a bigger reason that God gave this command.

Teaching the Next Generation

Deuteronomy 11:19
“And ye shall teach them your children, speaking of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.”

When God gives a child to a couple, they acquire a duty to teach them in the ways of the LORD. One of the greatest mindsets that a parent must acquire if they are going to turn their children out for the LORD is that the child does not belong to them, but the child belongs to God.

A Divinely Planned Journey

Numbers 33:1
“These are the journeys of the children of Israel, which went forth out of the land of Egypt with their armies under the hand of Moses and Aaron.”

I was reading the journeyings of the children of Israel, when the Holy Spirit reminded me of an important truth. I was reminded of Exodus 13:21-22 which says, “And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night: He took not away the pillar of the cloud by day, nor the pillar of fire by night, from before the people.”

What is so important to remember about these verses in Exodus is that everywhere Israel’s journeys were recorded in Numbers, it was God Who led them there. In other words, when they went to the bitter waters of Marah, God was still there, and He led them there.

A Never-failing Leadership Style

Numbers 27:17
“Which may go out before them, and which may go in before them, and which may lead them out, and which may bring them in; that the congregation of the LORD be not as sheep which have no shepherd.”

The verse above is the first verse of Moses’ response to God telling him that he was about ready to take him to Heaven. Moses was like any leader who had invested his life in people; he wanted to be sure that there was someone who led the people after he was gone. It wasn't that Moses doubted God’s ability to give them a leader, it was just that he loved those people and wanted to be sure they had someone to lead them down the right path.

Inheriting a Difference

Leviticus 20:24
“But I have said unto you, Ye shall inherit their land, and I will give it unto you to possess it, a land that floweth with milk and honey: I am the LORD your God, which have separated you from other people.”

When God gave the children of Israel the land of Canaan, He never intended for them to take the land to live like the people from whom they inherited the land. God intended for His people to be different. He says in the verse above, “…I am the LORD your God, which have separated you from other people.” The children of Israel certainly inherited a land, but they also inherited a difference when God wanted them to be separated “from other people.”
